Musings on the Bhagavad-Gita

Thank you very much to Shri Kuppa Viswanadha Sarma garu for explaining the Bhagavad-Gita slokas in detail. Most of us have known the essence of Gita & also some of us have read from the books to understand the meaning of slokas. But, the perspective from scholar who understands Vedas, Upanishads, nuances in Sanskrit , professor in law adds life to the content of Gita because it is very close to what Sri Krishna & Arjuna have in their minds when this happened. Some of the important points that helped me give new perspective are as follows,
1) Do Swadharmam
2) Have No expectation
3) During free time - Chant God (concept mananam)
4) Don’t get confused with tri gunas - na dwanda (Ragam-Bhayam/Dwesham-Krodham)
5) Focus on work/process not on results - Athri maharshi, Brahma garu - no anxiety
6) Do Sath Karma - Be in Sheryo margam - one step is good but it should be in right direction
7) Paramatma cannot be perceived with five senses - it is beyond and once known nothing else is bigger than that
8) Budhdhi saranam gachchami - tatva gnanam
9) Reduce desires
10) Everything is Eshwara anugraham & Eshwara Arpanam
11) See eshwara in everything and every task - perform with that devotion
12) Tatva Gnanam - No Papa or Punya is attached to the individual
13) Nishkama Karma examples below,
  • Draupadi Devi giving cloth to yogi and in return Lord gave unlimited saree
  • Thayagaraja Swamy - Nidhi chaala Sukhama Sri ramuni Sannidhi Chaala sukhama
  • Pothana garu, Rama dasu garu
14) Key is same to lock or unlock - Karma is the key - Nishkama Karma is to have no attachment on results - janma rahityam
Partha - one who wants to understand paramatma - tatva Gnanam
Partha sarathy - one who drives partha

15) Nirvedam - Vairagyam - should be indifferent not leaving everything but not doing everything but not attaching oneslef to it.
16) Responsibility-Desire-Goal framework to segregate tasks & assign priority
17) Sthitha Pragnatha - no desires but happy internally
18) Saswatha Anandam - Paramatma
19) Sthitha Pragnatha -
  • Be responsive not reactive, don’t get excited with happiness, don’t get bogged down with failures. Also, being unhappy can lead to obstruction of goals.
  • Control of senses is most important activity for a sthitha Pragna. Remember tortoise. Senses merge with objects to create thoughts fooling the individual to think that the object is greatest of all. But it fades with time and ultimate object is paramatma.
  • Sthitha Pragna realizing this gives no importance to these objects and only focuses on goal - paramatma
20) Focus on objects is the root cause of all Misery. Objects —> desire —> strong desire —> intelligence is lost —>  total destruction. Only solution is control senses and put focus on Lord
No Ragam, No dwesham - being not attached is key for liberation. Only ponder on Eshwara not on any objects
Aja/Dwaja/Yaja
21) Anger is reaction of nano-second imbalance. Patience is the key, don’t mix anger with ego and react. Be patient. Durvasa maharshi example. Control of manassu is the key which when in control, senses can be controlled. Horses will be in control only when charioteer is efficient.
22) Krishna says Gnanam is better than Karma, but asks Arjuna to follow Karma & hence Arjuna enquires the reason behind the same.
23) Krishna answers as Yogo Yogasya Desakaha
Yoga at a stage will prepare for and take you to next stage
Karma Yoga - do it diligently and eventually paramatma will guide to Gnana Yoga
(Mareechi - Karma Yoga, Sanakadhi maharshi - Gnana Yoga)
24) When talking to elders have Anagha - no sinful thought, asking with humbleness, respect to other individual who's more experienced & willing to help you to come up.
Partha - one who wants to understand paramatma - tatva Gnanam
Partha sarathy - one who drives partha
25) Leaving Karma is easy but Nishkama Karma means doing karma but not getting attached
26) No Asakthi - not result driven and not the doer - Eshwara Arpanam is the only way to prevent oneself from repeating life cycles and for Hrudaya sudhdhi and Manasu Sudhdhi
No sangam - as sangam leads to desire and anger and lost focus
Yogah Karmaya Kousalam - karma yoga
Do right things with Karmendriyas
Gnanedriyas to 🧘‍♀️ focus on god
Niyatham - things do as human being and general duties - can’t leave this, one has to do
Namasmaranam - niyatham ga
Muktha Sanga: -
Yagnam - work which are sweet to Paramatma
Don’t lose family and spirituality for promotions
27) When lord Brahma created human beings, he gave Yagnas for them to do (only humans). So Yagnas are more like siblings to humans
Do your rightful duties (Yagnas) and appease gods
Gods with respect to Paramatma will guide to ultimate truth in Shreyo margam
Gods are among human beings who have done right things and reached a good state towards Paramatma
28) Every Indriya has it’s own Raga Dwesham
Only solution is to keep Raga Dwesham in Control and not be controlled by them
Raga Dwesham are like robbers eating your Punyam all the time, be aware
Vivekachoodamani example on hunter playing flute to attract deers which may stop running for its life
Budhdhi should be governed by sastriya pravruththi (intellectual contemplation)
For any action, do cost benefit analysis 🧐 and do have long term view, don’t look for short term benefits
29) Complete belief & love towards God is what is required for every seeker
Kama leads to Krodha
Kama is highest disorder
Kama hides Gnanam like dust on a mirror
Kama has no end
Kama is enemy in disguise
Wise keep distance from Kama even when it is in small proportion as Kama slowly grows and eats Gnanam along the way
There is no end to Kama and the ideal way to deal with Kama is to not have it
30) Every result of Karma is based on Karma. Seekers should just focus on doing Karma & not on results from Karma. Seeker should keep continuing Karma even when when enlightened (Eg: King Janaka, King Raghu). God has no attachment to Karma as he's not doing anything for result. Just for duty sake, we should be doing Karmas.
31) No Karma to Athma
Heat the Karma Seeds with Agni called Gnanam
No Kama on any object
Moksha is best Medicine to reduce Kama
Be satisfied all the time - as satisfaction is due to Tattva Gnanam
NithyaTruptha
Nirasheyah - don’t depend on anyone
But Do Karma with full devotion
No phala for Karma
32) Don't get attached to any object. Desire is outcome of sensual experience of an object. Think of opposite way, the way on which kama on a object is preventing Gnanam. Kill that Kama. Don't have any desires towards objects. Do Karma just for the sake of body maintenance. If not followed, face the consequences of Karma & be in this matrix of maya forever.
Objects < senses < Manassu < Budhdhi < Atma/Gnana Swaroopa chaitanyam
Sthoolam --> Sukshmam
Evam Budhdhe param budhdhva --> Turn Budhdhi inwards towards Atma from outward objects
Control senses through Budhdhi/Manassu & kill Kama
Kama is like a Dog, as long as you feed biscuits, dogs won't leave you. As long as you experience sensual joys, senses cannot be in control. Control, Reduce, Stop desires.
33) Have no expectations on any thing like food, clothes, objects etc., Do the duty as per the right thinking, raise to a state called "Dwandateetam" (Jeevanmukthi). Gnani doesn't entertain "Nachchakapovadam" or "I don't like this". So no Kama/Krodha & hence Karma doesn't bind him. Be in "Sama" state irrespective of what is thrown on face. Hence, there is no lethargy in his behavior. He does everything that is required from him (does his duty). Gnani's body like spinning wheel turning even after stopped.
1) Sanaka, Sanadhi maharshi - Born Sidhdhi (Nithya Sidhdhi)
2) Janaka maharaja (Doing Karma perfectly but not binding to it as they're Jeevanmukthi) - Earned Sidhdhi
3) Paramatma - Just to inspire people (Above & Beyond)
34) See Brahma in everything
Asthi
Bhathi
Priyam
Namam
Roopam
Sat - Asthi
Chith - Bhathi
Anandam  - Priyam
Sat Chith Anandam - Brahma
35) Yogam - concentrating mind on one thing ( Patanjali maharshi) - Chitta Vruththi Nirodham
Samadhi - deep state with no thoughts
Swadhyayam - moksha Sadhana prayathnam
Danam, Tappasu, Yama Niyamalu, Swadhyayam, Gnanam
Progress towards Yagnas - follow Niyamams diligently towards Moksham
Eswara Pranidharam - Eshwara Arpanam
Gain Unlimited Niyamam - Sarvabhowma maha Vratham
Irrespective of creed, time, place, use or gains - unconditionally - Samsitha Vratham
36) Do relevant Yagna & ultimately reach Gnana state
37) Service & Saranagathi to Sadhguru is important. Ask/Enquire/Understand Tatvam from Tatva Darsha Gurus (Gnanis). Sanath kumarudu teaches Narada maharshi.
38) Only & Ultimate happiness comes from Tattva Gnanam. Any other happiness looks like it giving happiness but there are hidden dependencies that steal away that happiness. Wise should not go after anything but ultimate happiness (Tattva Gnanam)
39) Velocity of anger, fire of desire have unstoppable force. Only immovable peace & inward looking nature can upstream the currents of anger & desire.
40) Senses are designed to be external looking & don't have much capability to look inwards. Only the wise win over them, turn them inward, attain ultimate happiness.
46) Flower, Fruits, Water, Leaf --> Offer with love & have love on object being offered also
47) Bhakthi - Unconditional Love

48) Never look down on something and never look up on something - only Paramatma can offer Moksha, just pray and offer yourself to him
Objects don’t help and in fact they cause problems and hence to get rid of them only Paramatma can help
49) Tapassu
Less anger
Daya
Utter truth - no lies
Clean mind and body
Rama asked about whereabouts of Tapassu to Sabari, nothing else

Sabari just followed Mathangi maharshi instructions and patiently waited (~hundreds of years) for Rama to offer fruits, highlighted aspects of Mathangi maharshi mahimas, left body in Yoga Agni and ascended to higher levels
50) Paramatma encouraged to discuss Tatvam always - Guru, fellow beings, listeners, students
Example from Katopanishad
Kundu - pure mind
Oil - Bhakti
Vatti in right position - Satkarma, Gnana yogam, Sadhana
Lighting - god will take care with Daya
Ensure that there is no too much air - vishaya trishna       Anything other than god
With praksham - Burn agnanam
51) Avoid Tamo gunam - No Laziness, No unnecessary sleep
Very important for Seeker
52) Types of discussion by Gautama Maharshi
Vadam - discussion with objective to increase Tattva Gnanam
Jalpam - discussion with objective of winning over others
Vithandam - discussion with objective of saying that other person is wrong
